Welcome back to our second week - part of the 60 day information management refresher course from the CORTEX.
Week 2, Day 2
Theme: Big Data Practitioners
Continuing on from yesterday's exploration of big data we move on to look at how this is being used in a variety of businesses. Today we will look at twitter, and in the coming days Amazon, Facebook and at the end the week eharmony (for the lonely hearts out there).
READ Today's task: Realtime Analytics at Twitter 1.3Mb
30 minutes
Twitter Inc., 'Rainbird: Real-time Analytics @Twitter', Kevin Weil,
Product Lead for Revenue, Twitter, February, 2011.
Key takeout: It is amazing the amount of insight that you can squeeze from 140
characters. Just image what we could do with the mass of data available but
not used in our own companies.
Note: The middle of the presentation is fairly technical. If you aren't - then skip
over but still look at the slides detailing how they use the technology. It's
worth it.
WATCH For extra credit: Analyzing Twitter data with IBM BigSheets 200Mb
15 minutes
IBM Emerging Technologies, 'Analyzing Twitter data with IBM BigSheets',
presented by David Barnes of IBM, October 2010. This is one of a series of IBM
videos you can watch here.
Key takeout: If you are an existing InfoSphere user then maybe this is the tool
you can use to analyse both the data within your InfoSphere environment and
external data sets. If you have other technologies then BigSheets is at the least
an analytic signpost of one possible direction your analysis can take.
If you are banwidth poor then I recommend that you stream this video using YouTube.
Comments, questions and ideas are all welcome.
